We get Double Coupons here in the Portland, Oregon area. These are found in the weekly ads, and they allow you to double a Manufacturer Coupon up to $0.50 “extra” cents. Tonight I was denied for the first time in using a credit card to buy a GC Mall Mastercard. I’m fine with the denial if it is store policy but for these store employees to insist it is and has always been store policy to accept only cash for Visa/MC is a bit much. Yeah right, more than 75 times at ten different stores successfully purchased with credit cards and some of them with the very employees who denied me tonight. I’d like to to talk to the store manager and I’d really like to appeal his business side and ask him if he’d really like to lose the business by instituting the cash only rule. Do you know if SW makes any sort of money from Gift Card Mall gift cards and Visa/MC? Thx.
yeh. they were in the wrong. There are 2 types of GC. the giftcard mall ones you can used CC for. the others the Visa to go, and there is another one, basically cash card, must use cash.
I buy $500 MC from time to time and i would never carry that much cash. do they expect me too? no. The store manager can help you, and if not the DM can help you. this is one you can win.
I called the SW customer helpline and the guy looked up the policy and SW has a cash only policy for gift cards! It’s up to the individual store whether they accept credit card or not for “extending goodwill to loyal customers.” Why does a store carry gift cards? Are they making any money on the transaction? I’ve always assumed a store making at least 20% since the Triligeant sites used to let you buy gift cards for 20% off each month. I’ll try the store manager but I’m not hopeful.
from a link off safeways website, gets you to giftcardmall.com …which lets you buy visa/mc ONLINE! lol, which you pay for with a CC. i still think thats not policy, and i would mention this and the fact that albertsons and fred meyers 100% allows it. ask him/her if albertsons/fred meyer/giftcardmall.com AND your registers allow it, why its the only hold up, the person? 🙂

I bought two $500 MC at a different SW today. No problemo and no surprise there. Jeez.
Just talked to some sort of store higher up at the store. She told me that the variable MC/VIsa gift card is cash only because of fraud. Stolen credit cards were found to purchase the variable amounts more often. Well, I guess they’ll never know if it’s true or not since they don’t allow variable amounts to be purchased with credit cards. Just such a hokey response. What if I were to buy $500 worth of other gift cards with a stolen credit card? It’s still $500 of something purchased with a stolen credit card isn’t it? As if that would stop the thief from purchasing 2 x$200 + 1x$100 Visa/MC. A legitimate customer wouldn’t because of the exorbitant fees. It’s this sort of illogical reasoning that make customers PO’d.
The fixed amounts are okay to use with credit card.

I probably won’t pursue it further. The problem is getting to actually speak to a store director whose salary and bonuses hinges on better sales, etc. You can really reason with a store manager through examples of lost business by going to competitors, etc. whereas the rest of the employees only care about following the rules and at times, powertripping. Actually, I think the person I spoke to yesterday was the woman who denied me. lol. I have a feeling it’s going to be really difficult to get to the store director.
